Google is testing a shorter path from video to conversation
On August 27, Google announced that it is testing ways for viewers to start conversations with brands on messaging apps directly from Demand Gen ads on YouTube. Google also made Multimodal Video Creation in Asset Studio generally available, allowing advertisers to create horizontal and vertical assets in one workflow.
The distinction matters: AI-assisted video creation is generally available, while messaging from YouTube ads is still a test. Leaders should prepare for the behavior without building a forecast around a feature that may not yet appear in their accounts.
Google says improvements made to Demand Gen in the second half of 2025 produced an average 30% increase in conversions or conversion value in its experiments. That is Google’s internal aggregate result—not a promise of better qualified leads for a local contractor.
A conversation is not automatically a qualified lead
Removing steps can increase response volume, but it can also make casual engagement easier. Someone who sends a message while watching a pool transformation or storm-damage video has shown interest; they have not yet demonstrated service fit, project readiness or the ability to buy.
The business still needs a shared definition of a qualified opportunity. For most high-ticket contractors, that includes the right geography and service, a realistic project, an identifiable decision-maker, credible timing and a next step the team can actually serve.
- Treat a new message as the beginning of qualification, not the end
- Ask only the few questions needed to route the opportunity correctly
- Move qualified prospects toward a clear human-owned next step
- Record the conversation source and eventual pipeline outcome in the CRM
The creative and the conversation must make the same promise
Video can create desire quickly. The handoff fails when the message thread sounds like a different company—or when the person answering lacks the context that caused the homeowner to reach out.
Build creative around a specific customer situation: planning a custom pool, deciding whether to repair or replace a roof, modernizing aging equipment or comparing project approaches. Carry that same language into the opening response, qualification questions and appointment expectations.
One useful video should also work in multiple formats. AI tools can accelerate resizing, storyboarding and first drafts, but a person should protect the local details, project accuracy and emotional truth that make the work credible.
Use automation to protect response time—not replace judgment
Conversational acquisition raises the expectation of a conversational response. An automated acknowledgment can confirm receipt, identify the project type and alert the right person. It should not trap a serious homeowner in a long scripted exchange.
Set a response-time standard during business hours, establish who owns each service line and define when automation hands the conversation to a person. Give that person the ad, message history and known project details so the homeowner does not have to start over.
- Acknowledge immediately
- Route by service, geography and urgency
- Escalate pricing nuance and project-fit decisions to a person
- Use nurture only when timing—not fit—is the reason to wait
Measure whether conversations become business
A platform conversion can tell you that a conversation started. It cannot tell you whether a design consultation was held, a roof inspection produced a proposal or the project became profitable work.
Before expanding Demand Gen, connect campaign and creative data to qualified-message rate, appointment-booked rate, appointment-held rate, proposal rate, sale and acquisition cost. Compare those outcomes with Search, Local Services Ads, Meta and referral traffic using the same qualification standard.
If direct messaging becomes available in a client account, test it in a controlled campaign with a defined audience, modest budget and documented follow-up process. The goal is to learn whether a shorter path creates better conversations—not merely more of them.
The funnel is becoming a conversation sooner. Prepare the qualification rules, human ownership, creative continuity and CRM measurement now—then test new messaging features when they are actually available.
